Professional Experience
Teresa Dufort is a partner in McMillan's Litigation Group and Co-Leader of the firm's Product Liability Defence and Regulatory Group. She is also active in the Class Action Group, a member of the firm's Board of Partners and the firm's Knowledge Management Partner.
Teresa practices commercial litigation with a heavy emphasis on products liability litigation and risk management. She acts as national counsel for the Canadian product liability matters of two large global manufacturers of consumer products. She is the prime Canadian counsel to a number of other Canadian, American and European manufacturers and distributors. She has defended class actions and numerous other product liability lawsuits involving a variety of products including motor vehicles, fire and security products, medical devices, drugs, consumer products, recreational products, construction machinery, building materials and swimming pools.
As part of her litigation practice, Teresa has managed "same product" litigation across Canada and has extensive experience dealing with the challenges of multi-jurisdictional litigation.
Teresa has counselled many clients on risk assessment and management, including warnings and labelling. She also has extensive experience providing advice and counselling on regulatory issues for a variety of regulated products in Canada including motor vehicles, recreational products, toys, consumer products, electrical products, drugs and medical devices. She has advised companies on the regulatory requirements for selling products in Canada and the implications of non-compliance. She has counselled clients on numerous product recalls and managed them.
Teresa was selected for inclusion in the 2012 Guide to the World's Leading Women in Business Law as well as the 2006 inaugural edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada. She was also selected for inclusion in the newly created product liability law specialty in the 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013 editions of The Best Lawyers in Canada and in the 3rd edition of the Guide to the World's Leading Product Liability Lawyers. Teresa was listed in the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory 2012 as a leading practitioner in the area of litigation - product liability.

Teresa has published and spoken on a variety of product liability related topics. She co-authored Product Liability: Canadian Law and Practice published by Canada Law Book. She has spoken on product liability and regulatory topics at numerous conferences.
