Professional Experience Charles Chevrette is the Management Partner of McMillan's Montreal office and practices business law. Mr. Chevrette is a Québec market leader in private equity, venture capital mergers and acquisitions, as well as in sophisticated cross-border transactions.

In recent years, Mr. Chevrette has been involved in the creation of numerous stet funds and investment companies both in Canada and elsewhere. He regularly acts on behalf of major institutional investors and assists them in large and medium size local and international equity investments, joint ventures and acquisitions (including LBOs and MBOs).

Mr. Chevrette is particularly active in technology-related investments (IT, telecom, biotech, aerospace and energy) and in the financial services sector, working mostly in the context of larger co-investments ($30 million and more) made by Canadian institutional investors, along with foreign funds.

Charles has also been involved in very large number of major technology financings and buy-out transactions, acting for venture capital funds, universities, institutions utilities and growth companies.

Recent key mandates and transactions lead by Mr. Chevrette include:
  • Lead counsel to a syndicate of institutional investors domestic and non-domestic that successfully participated in the 2008 Advanced Wireless Spectrum Auction conducted by Industry Canada (Public Mobile);
  • Lead counsel to a company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange in connection with various private placements and placements by way of prospectus (Orbite Aluminae (TSX :ORT))
  • Lead counsel to one of the largest Québec-based private equity funds in connection with many buy-out transactions, including :
    • buy-out of an IT company commercializing solutions for biotech and pharma companies
    • buy-out of 3-D technology company
    • investment in a digital entertainment company
    • investment in, and divestiture of an interest in, a company developing and commercializing edge access technology for broadband providers
  • Lead counsel to a Canadian pension fund co-investing with world-class co-investors in a Bermuda-based company specialized in the acquisition and management of insurance and re-insurance companies;
  • Canadian counsel to a major U.S. private equity fund participating in a US$1 billion bid for a Canadian aerospace service company;
  • Counsel to a private equity fund in connection with the buy-out of a sportswear company based in the greater Montreal region;
  • Lead counsel to a French multinational in connection with the purchase of the assets and intellectual property regarding lithium-polymer battery technologies;
  • Lead Canadian counsel to a NYC-based private equity fund in connection with the buy-out of a biotechnology services company;
  • Strategic counsel to a company developing alumina extraction technologies in the negotiation of a collaboration agreement with a major aluminum producer in the Province of Québec.

Mr. Chevrette acts as strategic corporate counsel for many Québec-based companies, and as Canadian counsel for a number of multinationals and international investors doing business in Canada. His client base includes Public Mobile, Novacap and many others.

Before joining McMillan, Mr. Chevrette co-founded his own private equity investment firm, and served, at various times as Assistant Chief of Staff and Political Advisor to each of the Premier of Québec and the Leader of the Opposition in the House of Commons (Ottawa).

The combination of his expertise in business, his professional exposure in corporate law and his high-level political experience provides Mr. Chevrette with a solid background in corporate governance. This, in turn, has allowed him to assist very effectively Québec-based companies in developing strong relationships with foreign businesses and international investors outside of Québec.
